"Instant dedicated server" is a popular search, and a popular promise. A virtual server can genuinely be ready in a minute, because it is software. A dedicated server is a physical machine, so how fast can one really be ready, and what are you trading away for speed?
What happens between ordering and logging in
Every dedicated server goes through the same steps. How long each takes decides how "instant" the server is.
- The order and payment are checked. Most providers screen new orders for fraud, especially the first one on an account. That can take minutes, or longer if they need documents.
- A machine is assigned. If the build you ordered is in stock, racked and powered, this is immediate. If not, someone has to fit the parts.
- The hardware is checked. Good providers test memory and disks before handing a machine over, especially if it was used before.
- The operating system is installed. An automated install takes minutes to half an hour, depending on the image and the disks.
- The network is configured. IP addresses, any private network, and DDoS protection on the port.
- The details are sent. Login details, IPMI access and IP addresses.
Stock builds: usually ready in hours
When the server you want is already racked and waiting, all of the above usually fits within a few hours, and much of it is automated. This is what most "instant" and "same-day" offers really mean.
Custom builds: longer, for good reason
If you want a different CPU, more RAM, particular disks or a RAID controller, parts have to be fitted and the machine tested before it goes live. That takes longer than a stock build. A provider who promises a custom build in minutes is either describing a stock machine or skipping the testing.
What to check on an instant offer
Speed is not a specification. Before you take a server because it is ready now, check:
- The CPU model and generation. Quick-delivery stock is sometimes the oldest hardware the provider has.
- The disks. SSD or NVMe, and whether there are two in RAID or just one.
- IPMI access. You will want the remote console the first time something goes wrong.
- What "instant" covers. Does the clock start at payment, or after fraud checks and verification?

If you need a server within the hour
If the deadline really is today, don't wait for hardware. Start on something that is genuinely instant, then move:
- A Cloud VPS is ready in about a minute.
- A VDS, a virtual dedicated server with resources pinned on single-tenant hardware, is ready in under 90 minutes. It behaves much like a dedicated server for most workloads. Our post on bare metal vs dedicated vs VDS explains the difference.
Set up your application there, and move it to the dedicated server when that is ready. With the same network behind both, the move is a copy and a DNS change.
How long our dedicated servers take
Our dedicated servers are rented from live stock in five standard builds, so a stock server is usually ready within hours of the order. Custom builds are quoted the same day. If you need something running sooner, our virtual dedicated servers are provisioned automatically in under 90 minutes, and our engineers can help you move across when the dedicated server is ready.
