Tally on Cloud vs Tally on your PC:
what changes, and what does not.
Your Tally licence, your company data, your workflow — the question is only where TallyPrime runs. On a PC in the office, or on a URLStart server in a Tier IV datacenter that your accountant, owner and branches reach from anywhere. This page compares the two honestly: cost, access, backups, speed and risk.
Tally on Cloud or Tally on the PC — the short answer
- TL;DR
- Tally on Cloud runs your own licensed TallyPrime or Tally ERP 9 on a URLStart server; you and your team log in from any PC, laptop or tablet — from ₹584/month
- Tally on the office PC costs nothing extra to run, but ties the books to one machine, one location, one hard disk and whoever remembers to take a backup
- Move to the cloud when more than one person needs the books, when a CA or a branch works remotely, or when a single disk failure would be a disaster
- Your data stays in India, in a Tier IV datacenter in Greater Noida, backed up daily, with a 99.95% uptime SLA
Tally on Cloud is not a different Tally. It is the same TallyPrime or Tally ERP 9, with your own licence, installed on a private URLStart server instead of a desktop. You connect over Remote Desktop or a browser and work exactly as before — the difference is that the server is always on, backed up every night, reachable from anywhere, and shared by every user your Tally licence allows. Tally on a PC is simpler and free to run, and for a single user who never leaves the office it can be enough.

| Tally on your PC | Tally on Cloud (URLStart) | |
|---|---|---|
| Software | TallyPrime / ERP 9, your licence | TallyPrime / ERP 9, your licence |
| Running cost | ₹0 beyond the PC and power | From ₹584/mo |
| Where you can work | That one PC, or a VPN you maintain | Anywhere — office, home, CA’s office, branch |
| Several users at once | Needs a LAN and a server PC you manage | Built in — multi-user on one server |
| Backups | Manual, whenever someone remembers | Daily, automatic, off the server |
| If the hard disk dies | Books lost since the last manual backup | Restore from last night’s backup |
| Power cut / PC off | Nobody can work | Server stays on — 2N power in a Tier IV facility |
| Speed | Fast locally; slow over VPN or remote tools | Consistent from any connection; data sits next to the CPU |
| Security | Whoever can reach the PC | Encrypted remote access, user accounts, DDoS-scrubbed network |
| Updates & maintenance | You | URLStart (server); you (Tally releases) |
| Data residency | Your office | India — Greater Noida, Delhi NCR |
| Best for | One user, one location, low risk tolerance for cost | Firms with a CA, branches, remote staff, or books that must not be lost |
Keep Tally on the PC when.
Not everyone needs the cloud. These are the cases where we would tell you to stay put.
One person keeps the books
A single user at a single desk gets little from remote access.
Every rupee counts
₹584 a month is small for a firm and large for a side business. Be honest about which you are.
You already run disciplined backups
If a copy goes off-site every evening without fail, the biggest risk is already handled.
The internet is unreliable where you work
Cloud Tally needs a working connection. A PC does not.
Move Tally to the cloud when.
These are the situations that bring most firms to us.
Your CA works from their own office
They log in to your company data directly — no sending backups back and forth, no version confusion.
You have more than one branch
Every branch posts into the same company, in real time, instead of merging data at month end.
One disk failure would be a disaster
Nightly off-server backups and a 99.95% uptime SLA turn a catastrophe into a restore.
GST season
Several people filing and reconciling at once, from wherever they are, without the office PC becoming the bottleneck.
Owners want to look without visiting
Open the dashboard from a laptop at home or a tablet on the road.
You are tired of being the IT department
Server patching, uptime and backups become URLStart’s job. Tally stays yours.
